A log kill or log-reduction is a measure of how thoroughly a decontamination process reduces the concentration of a contaminant. The term “log reduction” indicates a 10-fold reduction(one decimal), which means that with every level, the number of bacteria or virus is reduced by 90%.

What does this really mean? If there is 1 million bacteria on a surface, a disinfectant with a 2-log reduction will leave behind 10,000 bacteria while a disinfectant with a 6-log reduction will kill all but 1 cell.
