What is a 6-Log Kill Rate?

A log kill or log-reduction is a measure of how thoroughly a decontamination process reduces the concentration of a contaminant. The term “log reduction” indicates a 10-fold reduction(one decimal), which means that with every level, the number of bacteria or virus is reduced by 90%.

A log kill or log-reduction is a measure of how thoroughly a decontamination process reduces the  concentration of a contaminant. The term “log reduction” indicates a 10-fold reduction(one decimal), which means that with every level, the number of bacteria or virus is reduced by 90%.

What does this really mean? If there is 1 million bacteria on a surface, a disinfectant with a 2-log reduction will leave behind 10,000 bacteria while a disinfectant with a 6-log reduction will kill all but 1 cell.

1-log reduction  = kills 90% of bacteria leaving 100,000 alive

2-log reduction  = kills 99% of bacteria leaving 10,000 alive

3-log reduction = kills 99.9% of bacteria leaving 1,000 alive

4-log reduction = kills 99.99% of bacteria leaving 100 alive

5-log reduction = kills 99.999% of bacteria leaving 10 alive

6-log reduction = kills 99.9999% of bacteria leaving 1 cell of alive

The majority of EPA registered disinfectants have a 3 or 4-log reduction and take anywhere between 5-30 minutes to work. SteraMist is a hospital grade disinfectant that has a 6-log reduction and kills 99.9999% of bacteria and viruses within seconds of application.

The Coronavirus is a highly infectious virus that you don't want to take a chance on.
