Mask Disinfection For Reuse

In response to N95 mask shortages in healthcare settings,Tomi Environmental Solutions--the manufacturer of SteraMist--has submitted an application to the FDA for emergency use authorization of SteraMist to disinfect masks for reuse.

There have been numerous published studies focusing on the application of SteraMist directly onto N95 masks. In a latest study published in "Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, August, 2020, SteraMist was tested on four 3D-printed materials for use in healthcare, including a surgical mask designed by the Veterans Health Administration. The study showed that all viruses including SARS-CoV-2 and HIV-1 were completely inactivated by a single application of iHP without affecting material integrity.

SteraMist® is a hydrogen peroxide-based mist/fog composed of ionized Hydrogen Peroxide(iHP™) technology that provides fast-acting biological six-log (99.9999% kill rate) reduction against pathogens while leaving no residue or noxious fumes. It is EPA-approved, non-toxic to humans and the environment and safe to use on electronics. Thanks to its proven safety, SteraMist can be used to virtually anywhere including, but not limited to, hospitals and medical facilities, cruise ships, office buildings, hotel and motel rooms, schools, restaurants, meat and produce processing facilities, military barracks, police and fire departments, athletic facilities, single-family homes and multi-unit residences.

SteraMist was initially developed with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to protect first responders from the weaponized anthrax attack against the US in 2001. In 2015, SteraMist Mobile Decontamination Chambers designed to disinfect healthcare workers and their equipment was selected for Award in the Fight Against Ebola: A Grand Challenge for Development by the U.S. Agency for International Development.
